Winter Can Be a Busy Time for Locksmiths

frozen door lock

We’ve had an exceptionally mild autumn, but the Met Office is reporting that winter cold weather could be about to arrive very suddenly indeed. Winter can be a busy time for locksmiths. Here are some of the reasons we get called out in the wintertime and some tips on lock care and house security that could come in handy.

Locks seizing up

If water works its way into your lock and then the temperature drops causing that water to freeze, the ice can prevent a lock from turning. In cold weather, it’s always worth blowing into a stiff or seized lock. Sometimes the warmth of your breath will be enough to melt the ice and free up the mechanism.

Burglary prevention

Getting a callout to update locks after a break-in is a depressing but necessary part of our job. We’d far rather visit before a break-in has occurred and advise on fitting insurance approved locks. At all times of year, but especially when the nights are long and the house is full of expensive gifts, please make sure that all your windows and doors are shut and secured when you head out.

Locked out at Christmas time

The festive party season is prime time for losing keys! In previous years, we’ve even come to the rescue on Christmas Day itself! If you have a trusted friend or neighbour close by - might be a good idea to leave a spare key with them. Nobody thinks getting locked out will happen to them, until it does!

If you have any doubts about the security of your home, we are more than happy to provide some impartial advice about improving your locks. For more information about our locksmith services, please get in touch. You can call us on 01603 812613 or email admin@ptlockandsafe.co.uk
