Where to Hide a Safe (That’s Not Behind a Portrait)

Gold bars inside of a safe.

It’s a common enough scene in film and TV: the portrait on the wall is revealed to be a hinged door behind which the villain keeps a wall-mounted safe. Where to hide a safe (that’s not behind a portrait) is a serious question for those who want to keep their valuables super secure! Here are some ideas for the best and worst places to hide your safe.

Imaginative Places to Hide a Safe

  • Under a Pot Plant. You can buy safes that are designed to be mounted in the floor. Conceal the door to your floor-mounted safe under an architectural plant such as a Rubber Plant or (if you like riddles) a Malabar Chestnut.
  • Behind a Mirror or Tapestry. Portraits are not the only wall hangings that a safe can be concealed behind. Consider mixing things up by disguising your safe door with a mirror or tapestry instead.
  • In your cellar or garage. Anywhere (except the loft – see below) that you keep cardboard boxes of old clothes, children’s toys and junk that you can’t bear to part with makes a great hiding place for a free standing safe. Simply conceal it with an old cardboard box marked ‘Xmas decs’.
  • In Plain Sight. A decoy safe full of costume jewellery might waste a burglar’s time while you are waiting for the police to arrive!

Worst Places to Hide a Safe

  • Office/Study. Any place that looks like you might do the accounting and store the petty cash is the first place that a burglar is going to ransack.
  • The Loft. Safes are heavy. Nobody should have to attempt to manoeuvre one up a ladder.

If you require a heavy safe to be moved safely, we have a dedicated safe removals van. Call us on 01603 812613 or email admin@ptlockandsafe.co.uk.
