What’s the value of the tools in your van? There’s the monetary value – average insurance claims following tool theft from vans are around £1200 – but there’s also the potential for loss of earnings while you attempt to replace them. If expensive tools are essential to your trade, then you need to make sure that they are secure in your van. It’s worth checking your insurance policy as well – you may not be covered if you do not have a heavy-duty lock such as a slamlock or deadlock.
Slamlock or Deadlock
What’s the difference between these two types of van door lock? A slamlock makes sure that your van door will automatically lock whenever you slam it closed – so as long as the door is shut, it is locked. Deadlocks are completely independent of your existing van lock. They are locked by a separate key and are extremely difficult to force open. Both designs will significantly improve your security.
Insurance Approved Locks
It is highly likely that, without additional locks, you will be unable to get insurance cover for the contents of your van. Van contents insurance policies differ by price and provider, so read the small print carefully! Some policies will not cover you if you leave your tools in the van overnight. Most are likely to be invalid, if you leave the doors and windows unlocked or if your alarm is found to be not working.
