Help, I’ve Forgotten My Safe Combination

combination lock safe

A safe is an extremely useful object for keeping your valuables out of the hands of burglars. But combination locks rely on the ability of the safe owner to remember the combination! It can be easy to buy a safe, set a number combination, and find that with one thing and another the actual sequence cannot be retrieved from your memory. Here are some things you can do if you need to get into your safe - and you can’t recall your combination.

1. Have a good think

What are some likely combinations that you might have used - might you have set the combination to a significant number such as someone’s birthdate?

2. Does anyone else know the combination?

Perhaps you have a business or romantic partner or trusted employee with whom you have shared the combination for your safe. Worth checking to see if they can recall the combination and regain access.

3. Is there a key override?

Some models of safe have a combination access and a master key that will override the combination and let you in for precisely this eventuality. If this is the case, let’s hope you can remember the safe place where you put the master key!

4. Can the combination be reset?

Some safes operate with a system known as a ‘change key’ that allows the combination to be reset. Check your safe manual to see if this is the case.

5. Contact a locksmith

If you have wracked your brains, asked your colleagues, checked the manual and still can’t regain access to your safe. Don’t panic! A trusted locksmith is only a phone call away.

At PT Lock & Safe, we pride ourselves on a familiarity with all kinds of safes and their locking mechanisms. From tiny domestic safes to room size lockable vaults, we’ve reunited many a safe owner with the contents of their safe as a result of lost keys and forgotten combinations. We always attempt to gain entry without compromising the integrity of the lock - so your safe can continue to be used. We’ve not yet been presented with a safe that we have to drill open - and we love a challenge!

If you are locked out of your safe, or thinking about buying and installing a safe, we are happy to help you out. We have a dedicated safe-moving van which we use for transporting large safes that may be too heavy for a conventional vehicle.
